I get asked a version of the same question a lot: “Carl, you run two things — Carl Shawn Watkins Consulting™ and Courage2Connect Coaching™. Aren't those the same business with two names?”
Fair question. Here's the honest answer: no, they're not the same thing. But they come from the exact same belief, and I want to explain why I built it that way on purpose.
The Belief Underneath Both Businesses
I spent thirty-plus years leading people — in finance, in mortgage and compliance, in operations, and now inside courtrooms and law firms as a paralegal working alongside attorneys every day. Across every one of those rooms, I kept running into the same pattern: the leaders people actually trusted weren't the ones who never showed a crack. They were the ones who let a crack show, and kept leading anyway.
That's not a soft idea. That's courage. And I built my entire body of work — the Courage2Connect Method™, the D+V=I™ framework (Diversity + Vulnerability = Inclusion), the Leadership Identity Assessment™ — around one conviction: vulnerability isn't the opposite of strong leadership. It's the foundation of it.
But belief only matters if it shows up at the right scale for the problem in front of you. That's why there are two businesses, not one.
Carl Shawn Watkins Consulting™: When the Problem Is the System
Carl Shawn Watkins Consulting™ exists for organizations — law firms, legal departments, offices where the culture, not just one person's leadership style, needs to change. This is the Legal Leadership Accelerator™ work. It's discovery questionnaires before I ever walk into a room. It's executive sessions built around your actual leadership dynamics, not a generic template. It's the kind of engagement I recently ran for 25 prosecutors at the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office — attorneys trained their entire careers to project certainty, learning that courage and precision aren't in conflict. They're partners.
Consulting is for when the fix has to hold across a team, a department, or a firm — when one person changing isn't enough, because the system around them hasn't changed with them.
Courage2Connect Coaching™: When the Problem Is Personal
Courage2Connect Coaching™ exists for the individual leader — the executive navigating a transition, the leader who's hit a ceiling that skill alone won't fix, the person who's tired of leading from a script instead of leading from who they actually are.
This is one-on-one work. It's the Clarity Session™ where we find the single highest-leverage thing standing in your way. It's built on the same six pillars — Clarity, Courage, Communication, Connection, Credibility, Continuity — but applied at the pace and depth that only individual coaching allows. Some leadership gaps aren't organizational. They're personal, and they deserve a room built just for that.
Why This Matters to You
Here's what I want you to take from this, whether you're reading as a firm leader or as an individual leader: don't confuse the size of the problem with the size of the courage it requires. A firm-wide culture shift and a single leader's personal reckoning both demand the same thing underneath — the willingness to stop performing certainty and start leading honestly.
The scale is different. The courage required isn't.
If you're leading an organization that needs to build trust and accountability at scale, that's Carl Shawn Watkins Consulting™ — and the Legal Leadership Accelerator™ is where that work starts.
If you're an individual leader who knows something needs to shift and you're ready to do that work with someone in your corner, that's Courage2Connect Coaching™ — and a Clarity Session™ is the first step.
Either way, the invitation is the same one I opened with: stop hiding the human struggle. Lead with it instead.
Courage is the currency. Spend it well.
